'Transformers: Age of Extinction' to World Premiere in Hong Kong
Director Michael Bay makes good on his promise to return to Hong Kong, despite the two extortion attempts that were made against him and his crew during the film’s shoot there.
Transformers: Age of Extinction will have its world premiere in Hong Kong on June 19th, with Michael Bay and the main cast attending the red carpet event in the city where the he and his crew experienced two extortion attempts while shooting.
During 10 days of filming in Hong Kong, aside from the two extortion attempts, Bay had to cope with mass protests over a TV license controversy that nearly interfered with shooting an explosion scene.
In the most dramatic of the various incidents, Bay was attacked by a man wielding an air conditioning unit as a weapon, after he and his crew refused to pay protection money to a pair of local gang members. He subsequently described the incident as "kind of scary" but insisted he would be back to the city to shoot again, calling it "very visual."
The band Imagine Dragons will perform an original song at the event in the city, the director announced on his website. The Grammy Award-winners’ song Battle Cry features in the movie and they cooperated with the movie’s composer Steve Jablonsky on the event.
“Additionally, the band contributed original music during the scoring process by recording cues with Jablonsky, the film’s composer, and Hans Zimmer, who assisted in the process. The collaboration resulted in added depth to the sound of the film,” according to Bay's website.
In February, two brothers were jailed for attempting to extort nearly $13,000 from Bay and his crew on the Hong Kong set of the movie. The judge also reprimanded the men for being an embarrassment to Hong Kong, and for tarnishing the territory’s reputation abroad.
In 2011, Transformers: Dark of the Moon took $165 million of its $1.1 billion worldwide take in China, and four young Chinese actors were chosen to play supporting roles in Transformers: Age of Extinction via a reality TV show.
Transformers: Age of Extinction stars Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, Jack Reynor, Li Bingbing and Han Geng, and is due in theaters on June 27.
