A slate of original Amazon Studios titles will stream exclusively on the upstart SVOD, bypassing TV networks.

Sony Pictures Television has inked an exclusive distribution deal with Canadian SVOD Shomi to get original Amazon Studios series, such as the Golden Globe-winning Transparent, into Canada for the first time.

Other Amazon original titles bypassing traditional TV channels north of the border include Betas, Alpha House, Tumble Leaf and Mozart in the Jungle. The licensing deal for Shomi, following earlier catalog deals with Disney/ABC Television Group, Warner Bros., Starz Digital Media and 20th Century Fox, comes as the SVOD competes aggressively against Netflix Canada and rival Canadian streamer CraveTV.

"The thing that's most exciting about Amazon Originals is the level of talent their series are attracting," said Marni Shulman, head of content and programming at Shomi, a joint venture between Canadian media giants Shaw Media and Rogers Media.

Amazon has not yet responded to The Hollywood Reporter's request for comment.
