Late Night Hosts Criticize Trump's Removal of Bathroom Protections for Transgender Students

"Hey — just because you want to bring back coal mining doesn't mean you have to bring back everything from the 1800s."

On Thursday night, Seth Meyers, Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon talked about the Trump administration rescinding Obama's guidelines that allowed transgender students to use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender identity.

Seth Meyers did a "Hey!" segment on the issue. "Hey — just because you want to bring back coal mining doesn't mean you have to bring back everything from the 1800s," said Meyers.

"During the election you told the LGBT community 'I will fight for you,'" he continued, addressing Trump. "Did you not mean to include the word 'for'?"

The Late Night host said some people are using the reasoning that transgender children use the protections as a "ruse to sneak in to rest rooms and grab people by the genitals." He said, "If you're looking for the kind of person who would do that, you need to look no further than the Oval Office."

Stephen Colbert started his show with a cold open in which bathroom signs sent a strong message to Trump. In his monologue, he referenced the news again.

"If there's one thing Trump is famous for, it's telling people where to pee," he joked, alluding to the scandalous golden-shower rumors about the president.

He said it's weird that one of the saving graces of Trump's campaign was that he seemed to be fine with transgender people using the bathroom of their choosing, like when he said Caitlyn Jenner could use whichever bathroom in Trump Tower that she'd like. "I'm sure a lot of trans people right now would love to take a dump in Trump's lobby," said Colbert.

Jimmy Fallon briefly mentioned the revoking of protections in his monologue.

"I saw that Apple is criticizing Trump after he overturned the rule that lets transgender students use the bathroom of their choice," said Fallon. "Apple says regardless of your gender everyone should be able to drop an iPhone into whichever toilet they want."
