Numbers to cheer at NBC, Lifetime

NBC rushed into first place in the primetime ratings Sunday night as broadcast NFL coverage returned. The Washington Redskins-Indianapolis Colts preseason game (7.2 million viewers, 2.4 rating/7 share in adults 18-49) was up 26% from last year. On Saturday night, Lifetime's latest original telefilm, "Fab Five: The Texas Cheerleader Scandal," performed strongly. About 3 million viewers tuned in for the premiere, the highest-rated Lifetime movie this year in women 18-34 and 12-17.

Pair join 'Choir'

Rhea Perlman and Jason Gedrick have been tapped to star in Hallmark Channel's holiday movie "The Christmas Choir." The drama airs Dec. 6.

Lauer on board

"Today" co-host Matt Lauer will co-anchor with Bob Costas coverage of Friday's Olympics Opening Ceremony. Coverage of the tape-delayed event will begin at 7:30 p.m. instead of the previously planned 8 p.m.

Novak to retire

Chicago Sun-Times columnist and TV pundit Robert Novak will retire, effective immediately. He had been hospitalized in Boston with a brain tumor.

ROBINSON STAYS PUT

Shaun Robinson has signed a new multiyear contract to continue as weekend co-anchor/ correspondent of "Access Hollywood."
