'NewsHour' expands with Gates grant

PBS' "The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer" will add a production unit that will focus on global health issues in the developing world thanks to a three-year, $3.5 million grant being funded through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. About 40-50 documentary reports on such issues as HIV/AIDS, measles and tuberculosis will be featured on the program.

Hall passes

Bea Arthur, Larry Gelbart, Merv Griffin, Daniel B. Burke & Thomas Murphy and Sherwood Schwartz will be inducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' Hall of Fame at a ceremony Dec. 9 at the Beverly Hills Hotel. James Denton ("Desperate Housewives") will host.

Exec producer for 'Oz'

Mindy Moore Borman (ABC's "The View") has been named executive producer of the upcoming syndicated talk show "Dr. Oz" from Harpo Prods. and Sony Pictures TV. The show, which has been cleared in 80% of the country, will be produced in HD in New York.

'Leverage' buy

TNT has inked seasonlong sponsorship deals with DirecTV, Hewlett-Packard and Hyundai for the series "Leverage," which premieres commercial-free at 10 p.m. Sunday.
