TV Pilot Madness

CAST: Kristin Chenoweth
Jason Merritt/Getty Images

What will be the next hit? THR breaks down all 83 broadcast pilots currently under review as industry execs start embarking on do-or-die decisions about every last one.

THE REBOOTS: Pre-branded franchises often score pickups: ABC’s Charlie’s Angels isn’t the first attempt to relaunch the series in the U.S. Back in 1988, Aaron Spelling recruited four women for Angels 88, which never made it on the air. … Maria Bello, star of NBC’s reboot of the BBC’s Prime Suspect, was also approached for the role last pilot season but passed. … In NBC’s Wonder Woman, Diana Prince is a crime-fighting businesswoman, a far cry from the character’s origins fighting Axis military forces in World War II.

GLEE EFFECT: Music is in the air this season
Will rival networks capture a slice of Fox’s Glee phenomenon? NBC’s Smash goes inside the production of a Broadway musical (with the help of American Idol alum Katharine McPhee). … ABC’s Grace, featuring Debbie Allen, is set in the world of professional dance. … Marc Cherry’s ABC dramedy Hallelujah will showcase a gospel choir each episode. … Even NBC’s drama Playboy is said to feature musical performances at the iconic 1960s Playboy Club.

THE SUPERNATURAL: Heaven and hell are well-represented
Network TV is again a portal for the undead. The CW has zombies in Awakening, witches in The Secret Circle and a soul-saving angel in Heavenly. Fox’s Locke & Key is set in a haunted house, and its Kiefer Sutherland drama Touch gives an autistic boy special powers. NBC’s REM and 17th Precinct bring supernatural elements to cop dramas, and CBS’ Untitled Susannah Grant does so for a doctor. ABC’s Once Upon a Time and NBC’s Grimm jump on the fairy-tale trend in films.
