TV Ratings: 'Today' Enjoys Summer Hot Streak
The NBC morning show takes the lead for July, winning its seventh week in recent months.
Today continues to move the chains in the increasingly tight morning-show race. For the second straight week, the NBC show is again in the lead among its targeted adults 25-54 audience.
Winning two consecutive weeks in the key demographic, Today now is tracking narrowly ahead of Good Morning America for the month of July — its 1.535 million adults 25-54 topping GMA by 63,000 viewers. The month, which ends this week, still could go to either show. A Today win for the entire month would be its first since 2012.
Today's latest weekly victory, which saw it best GMA by 131,000 adults 25-54, is its seventh win in the last 14 weeks. It's been more than three years since the two shows were so evenly matched.
GMA still has a clear edge on total viewers — a title it hasn't lost grip of in years — but Today is closing the gap. The week July 20 brought an average 4.32 million viewers to GMA, 291,000 viewers ahead of Today.
There will be no altering the rankings for the season. GMA currently leads Today by both measures — with 557,000 more viewers and 108,000 more adults 25-54 — but all of the recent movement sets the stage for an incredibly competitive 2015-2016 season when it starts in little more than a month.
