'Twilight: Breaking Dawn - Part 2' Dominates Home Video Sales Charts
Talk about Twilight fever.
Demand for the home video release of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2 was so great that the theatrical teen vampire hit managed to take the top two spots on both national home video sales charts the week ending March 3.
Distributor Lionsgate issued Breaking Dawn — Part 2 on Saturday, with midnight retail events the night before at more than 3,000 stores nationwide. By Sunday night, the Summit Entertainment film had sold an estimated 3.85 million units, according to Lionsgate.
In addition, a special Wal-Mart exclusive two-pack that paired Part 2 with Part 1 landed at No. 2 on Nielsen VideoScan’s First Alert chart, which tracks overall disc sales, and Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart. This set sold 21.5 percent as many copies as the standalone Part 2.
A Best Buy exclusive Blu-ray set of all five Twilight films debuted at No. 12 on the Blu-ray chart, further adding to the finale’s impressive total.
Lionsgate also reissued Part 1 as an extended cut March 2, helping push the title up to No. 8 on First Alert and No. 13 on the Blu-ray Disc chart, more than a year after its initial release. The third film in the franchise, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, rose to No. 18 on First Alert.
The previous week’s top two titles on First Alert, Warner’s Argo and MGM’s Skyfall, slipped to No. 3 and No. 4. The order was reversed on the Blu-ray chart, where previous No. 1 Skyfall slipped to No. 3 and Argo dropped to No. 4.
The only other new releases to make the top 20 on either sales chart were Universal Studios’ Barbie in the Pink Shoes, a direct-to-video release that bowed at No. 5 on First Alert, and Anchor Bay’s The Master, which debuted at No. 10 on the Blu-ray chart (No. 16 on First Alert). The Master is a Weinstein Co. drama that respectively earned best actor, supporting actor and supporting actress nominations for Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams.
On Home Media Magazine’s video rental chart for the week, 20th Century Fox’s Taken 2, Universal Studios' End of Watch and Paramount’s Flight all repeated in the top three spots.
