'Breaking Dawn' Sells an Estimated 3.2 Million Units in Its First Weekend

The latest installment in the 'Twilight' saga racks up huge numbers for Summit and Lionsgate on home video.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 sold an estimated 3.2 million Blu-ray and DVD units in its first weekend of release, Summit Entertainment announced today. Since it became available Saturday, Feb. 10 at 12:01 AM, sales were approximately 18 percent ahead of the opening-weekend returns of the home video release of its predecessor, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.

Additionally, sales via digital platforms exceeded those of previous Twilight films, accumulating approximately 50,000 in Electronic Sell Through transactions, which is a 47 percent increase over its predecessor. Meanwhile, the film racked up almost 80,000 video-on-demand transactions, which is a 142 percent increase over Eclipse.
Like the company did with past Twilight releases, Summit and its parent company Lionsgate released the film at outlets like Target and Walmart on Friday night rather than on Tuesday, when most home video titles are released. The revenues generated by the home video release join the more than $700 million the film earned while in theaters since its release on November 18, 2011.
