'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2' Hits Opening Weekend Record in Spain
New record unseats "The Impossible" as top opener.
MADRID - The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn- Part 2 set a new high for the biggest 3-day opening week-end ever in Spain, achieving an historical record of €9.2 million (USD $11,784,400) in total box office gross, Alliance Films' Spanish subsidiary Aurum Producciones announced Thursday.
“Spain is arguably per capita the most successful territory for the Twilight saga, which is a tribute to the quality of the films, the faithfulness of the fans but also the work and expertise of our Spanish team,” said Xavier Marchand, President of Worldwide Distribution, Alliance Films.
The announcement comes on the heels of a previous record-breaking weekend marked by Juan Antonio Bayona's The Impossible, which earned 8.97 million euros ($11.5 million) in mid-October.
"The movie-going market in Spain is hot right now thanks to a strong performance by [Spanish animated feature] Tad, The Lost Explorer followed by The Impossible," Rentrak's Spain General Manager David Rodriguez said.
The Twilight franchise has grossed a total of €71,794,410 (USD $91,896,554), in Spain, with New Moon slightly eclipsing the others with €19,982,390.
"This record shows the strength of the Twilight saga in Spain and the skills of our theatrical team, in a very difficult marketplace," Jorge Vazquez, Aurum’s general manager said in a statement.
Aurum will also distribute the next three films of Lionsgate's Hunger Games franchise, as well as Red 2.
