Twitter Ad Revenue Expected to Triple to $150 Million in 2011

Facebook should rake in more than $4 billion this year, while MySpace revenue is projected to fall by more than $100 million.

Twitter is projected to earn $150 million in ad revenue this year, which is more than three times what the service earned in 2010, according to a new report from eMarketer.

That's still a far cry from Facebook, which is expected to earn $4.1 billion this year.

On the other hand, the News Corp.-owned MySpace is expected to see a significant drop, falling from $288 million last year to $184 million in 2011.

By 2012, Twitter revenue could reach $250 million, surpassing MySpace's projected take of $156 million. Facebook is eyeing a possible $5.7 billion haul next year.

But eMarketer experts caution that Twitter "must show it can live up to its hype."

"If Twitter can grow its user base and convince marketers of its value as a go-to secondary player to Facebook, it will succeed in gaining revenue," said Debra Aho Williamson, eMarketer principal analyst. "In 2011, it must work overtime to give its early advertisers a positive experience."
