Dueling Dames
Rankin/Universal; Matthew Rolston/Relativity Media

Universal vs. Relativity gets nasty as the studios jockey for whose movie is fairest of them all.

JUNE 2010
Relativity:
The studio picks up an untitled, family-friendly Snow White script by Melissa Wallack.

SEPTEMBER 2010
Universal:
A tougher take called Snow White and the Huntsman is announced with commercials director Rupert Sanders attached.

NOVEMBER 2010
Relativity:
Director Tarsem Singh joins as a June 29, 2012, release date is set -- a full six months before Uni's planned December 2012 bow.

JANUARY 2011
Universal
: Oscar winner Charlize Theron is cast as the Evil Queen, signaling Huntsman will be an A-list project.

FEBRUARY 2011
Universal
: Huntsman lands Twilight's Kristen Stewart as Snow White. Tough to top that star power. (Casting coup)

FEBRUARY 2011
Relativity:
Want a bigger star than Charlize? How about Julia Roberts, announced as the Queen? (Casting coup)

APRIL 2011
Relativity:
The studio goes smaller, naming up-and-comer Lily Collins as Snow White opposite Armie Hammer as the Prince.

MAY 2011
Universal:
Having cast Thor's Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsman, Uni bumps its release to June 1, 2012, four weeks before Relativity's movie. (Jerk move!)

MAY 2011
Relativity: Just nine days after the Huntsman switcheroo, Relativity leapfrogs its rival with a new release date of March 16, 2012. (Whaat!?)

JUNE 2011
Universal:
Veteran character actors including Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins and Ray Winstone are named as dwarfs, trumping Relativity's no-name septet.

JULY 21, 2011
Relativity:
A photo of Collins as Snow White is leaked on the eve of the Huntsman Comic-Con panel. But even though its film is in production, Relativity passes on bringing footage.

JULY 22, 2011
Universal
: Despite having no footage to show, director Sanders wows the crowd with a test reel and four cast shots. Producer Joe Roth calls the Relativity film "soft." (Advantage, Huntsman)
