LONDON -- The U.K. will begin the nation's switch off of the analog TV signal on Oct. 17, kicking off a region-by region process due to conclude in 2012, it was announced Thursday.

Access to BBC2 in the North of England town of Whitehaven will be cut for those with analog receivers, switch-off body Digital U.K. told local residents.

BBC1, ITV1, Channel 4 and Five will be switched off Nov. 14 in the region, which represents 25,000 of the U.K.'s 25 million TV homes.

Digital U.K. will be hosting a series of seminars for local residents as well as a regional marketing push designed to educate viewers about the transition.
