U.K.'s Double Negative and India's PFW Announce Mumbai VFX Facility Plans

Double Negative did extensive work on Christopher Nolan's 'Interstellar'

Among its various Hollywood projects, the go-to facility for Christopher Nolan has won Oscars for 'Inception' and 'Interstellar.'

Leading U.K.-based VFX house Double Negative and India's Prime Focus World (PFW) have announced plans to set up a new facility in Mumbai's Film City complex.

PFW — the creative services division of Mumbai headquartered Prime Focus Limited — merged its VFX business with Double Negative last year. PFW also has facilities in Los Angeles, Vancouver, London and Beijing.

In addition to its various Hollywood projects, London-based Double Negative is the go-to facility for Christopher Nolan, who worked with the VFX house on his Dark Knight films as well as winning Oscars for Inception and Interstellar.

The Mumbai studio will be built to the same standards as Double Negative's facilities in London, Vancouver and Singapore, the companies said in a statement. Movies already slated for work in Mumbai include The Huntsman starring Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron and Emily Blunt and Ron Howard's Tom Hanks starrer Inferno, which also features Indian actor Irrfan Khan (Slumdog Millionaire, Life of Pi).

“Prime Focus is the undisputed industry leader in India and knows the market, the culture and the landscape better than any other company,” said Double Negative CEO Matt Holben. “This collaboration plays to the strengths of both companies, the intention being to create a world-class VFX facility that can proudly sit alongside the rest of D-Neg’s global network.”

“This is another great step forward for Prime Focus World and Double Negative,” added Prime Focus founder, executive chairman and global CEO Namit Malhotra. “Prime Focus is committed to supporting D-Neg in achieving its vision of becoming a truly global company in the high-end film industry, and this new state-of-the-art facility will help them to remain creative and competitive across all of their locations, and to continue producing award-winning visual effects work that is second-to-none.”

Double Negative and PFW recently collaborated on various projects, providing VFX and 3D stereo conversion services for Avengers: Age of Ultron, Terminator: Genisys and Ant-Man. Upcoming projects include Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation, Insurgent, Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass, Tarzan, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and the next James Bond title, Spectre.
