U.K.'s FIlm4 ups Katherine Butler

Promoted to senior commissioning executive

LONDON -- FIlm4, Channel 4's standalone filmmaking arm, has promoted head of development Katherine Butler to be senior commissioning executive in the wake of Peter Carlton's exit to join Warp Films.

Butler will be charged with overseeing Film4's low budget films and will aim to work closely with new talent, Film4 said.

The newly-promoted Butler joined Film4 as development chief in January 2005 and has worked on movies including "Slumdog Millionaire," "Hallam Foe" and "How To Lose Friends And Alienate People."

Prior to Film4, Butler was development head and executive producer at the New Zealand Film Commission for four years.

Film4 and Channel 4 Drama controller Tessa Ross said Butler's elevation indicated her commitment to Film4.

The broadcaster and film unit's future is currently the center of much debate here in the industry amid budget cuts, falling ad revenues and a slide in funding. All at time when the movie unit is enjoying global success with its output.
