Universal Pictures has picked up the rights to Lauren Weisberger's chick-lit best-seller "Chasing Harry Winston" for Mandalay Pictures to produce.

Andy Tennant is attached to direct the adaptation, which Gina Wendkos will write.

Published in May, the third novel from the author of "The Devil Wears Prada" tells the story of three women in New York — a daughter of a supermodel, a rising star in the publishing business and a newly single female — who vow to change their lives for the better in the course of a year.

The movie adaptation will focus and expand upon one of the three story lines.

Mandalay Pictures' Cathy Schulman and Scarlett Lacey brought the project to Universal, where it will be overseen by Kristin Lowe and Maradith Frenkel.

Mandalay is working on Universal's remake of "The Birds" with Platinum Dunes as well as Werner Herzog's "The Piano Tuner."

Tennant, repped by CAA, most recently directed "Fool's Gold" and has among his credits the romantic comedies "Hitch," "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Ever After."

CAA-repped Wendkos wrote "The Perfect Man" for Universal as well as the "Princess Diaries" movies and "Coyote Ugly." (partialdiff)
