Universal Hits New North American Box-Office Record
With the powerhouse opening of 'Straight Outta Compton,' the studio will hit $2 billion at the domestic box office today.
With Straight Outta Compton showing real muscle at the box office, Universal Pictures is looking at yet another new record and will cross $2 billion at the North American box office today — the fastest any studio has ever reached that figure in a year. Heading into the weekend, the studio’s total domestic gross stood at $1.958 billion, and Compton will add another $50 million-plus to its coffers this weekend.
Universal overtakes the speed record previously held by Warner Bros., which reached $2 billion on Dec. 25, 2009, and it also is poised to cross the all-time domestic record later this year — a record also set by Warner Bros. in 2009 when it reached $2.1 billion.
In June, Universal notched the quickest rise ever to $1 billion domestically, and just last week, it broke the record for the highest-grossing box-office year in global-industry history when it reached $5.53 billion worldwide.
Among its box-office records so far this year, Universal has the highest-grossing film in North America — and the world — with Jurassic World ($637.1 million domestic, $960.6 million international and counting), which took its place as the third-highest-grossing film ever last month. Universal titles represent five of the top 10 highest-grossing films of 2015 in North America: Jurassic World, Furious 7, Minions, Fifty Shades of Grey and Pitch Perfect 2.
Universal has had five films open at No. 1 at the North American box office and held the top spot at the domestic box office for 11 weekends. With Straight Outta Compton, Universal is on track for a sixth No. 1 film and a 12th No. 1 weekend — more than any other studio.
Nicholas Carpou, the studio's president of domestic distribution, said in a statement, “We knew that 2015 was going to be a special year and were hopeful that our varied slate of franchise tentpoles, sequels and original films would resonate with audiences’ diverse moviegoing tastes. This milestone contributes to a win for our entire industry in a year that continues to see healthy growth and is on pace to be among the biggest ever. We applaud our friends and partners in exhibition, whose optimistic support has been essential to our success.”
