Universal-Mattel DVD pact extended

Covers worldwide rights on direct-to-disc features

Universal has extended its DVD-distribution pact with Mattel for four years.

The pact covers worldwide rights on 10 new direct-to-disc animated features. On Jan. 1, Uni also will newly acquire home-entertainment rights to several previous "Barbie" movies.

"The phenomenal success of the 'Barbie' titles we've released over the past three years not only confirms the exceptional global appeal of Mattel's movies, but it also underscores the strength in pairing Mattel's celebrated and beloved Barbie brand with Universal's formidable worldwide marketing and distribution infrastructure," Universal Studios Home Entertainment president Craig Kornblau said.

"With 75 million movies sold worldwide and our titles consistently ranking No. 1 on the charts, Barbie has demonstrated unparalleled success as a powerful girls' entertainment franchise since 2001," Mattel senior vp Richard Dickson.

On Sept. 23, Uni announced a deal with Mattel to produce a new live-action Barbie movie for theatrical release in 2011.
