'Megamind' Hot on Trail of No. 1 'Unstoppable'
Fox's Denzel Washington starrer Unstoppable is off to a speedy start in its opening weekend.
Its estimated $8.1 million in Friday box office topped the daily domestic rankings and keeps the runaway-train actioner on track for a possible No. 1 weekend bow of up to $25 million through Sunday. But 3D animated feature Megamind, from DreamWorks Animation and Paramount, will keep the pressure on in a race for the top spot.
Megamind's $7.9 million in Friday box office yielded $67.6 million in cumulative box office for the PG-rated family comedy. With Saturday and Sunday matinees likely to be strong, a $20 million-plus weekend appears certain and a repeat atop the domestic rankings by Megamind is still possible.
Universal's scifi thriller Skyline rung up $4.7 million in its first day of release Friday to make likely a three-day haul in the low double-digit millions. Warner Bros.' comedy Due Date fetched $5.5 million in fourth place in its eighth day of release on Friday to produce a $49 million cume.
Paramount's ensemble dramedy Morning Glory collected $3.1 million Friday, good for fifth place in the daily rankings and a shot at double-digit figures on the frame. The Rachel McAdams starrer totes a $5.7 million cume since unspooling on Wednesday.
Lionsgate's Tyler Perry-directed drama For Colored Girls registered $2 million in sixth place on Friday for cume of $26.2 million at the beginning of its second weekend.
