Tony winner Sam Gold helms the production featuring a book by Pulitzer-winning playwright Lynn Nottage and music by Tony winner Duncan Sheik.

Uzo Aduba has her crazy eyes on a new stage show.

The Emmy-winning actress of Netflix's Orange Is the New Black is set to star in a musical workshop production of The Secret Life of Bees. The show will be performed throughout the July 27 weekend, as part of Vassar and New York Stage and Film's Powerhouse Season in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

Directed by Tony winner Sam Gold (Fun Home, Othello), the new musical adaptation features a book by Lynn Nottage, who just won a Pulitzer Prize for her Broadway play Sweat. It also has music by Tony winner Duncan Sheik (Spring Awakening) and lyrics by Tony nominee Susan Birkenhead (Ain’t Misbehavin’).

Alongside Aduba as Rosaleen, the workshop's cast also includes Eisa Davis, Sophia Anne Caruso, Kecia Lewis, Ben Davis and Odiseas Georgiadis.

Based on the novel by Sue Monk Kidd, the 1960s-set Secret Life of Bees centers on a white teenager who flees with her black caretaker to a South Carolina town, where the two find solace in the mesmerizing world of beekeeping. The book was previously adapted into a 2008 Fox Searchlight film which starred Jennifer Hudson, Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys and Sophie Okonedo.

Aduba, a New York stage regular in the Orange off-season, was last seen on Broadway in the 2011 revival of Godspell. If Bees moves forward, her casting in the lead would be guaranteed to bring in a sizeable Orange audience. She also was part of the cast of the off-Broadway play Venice in 2013, and most recently showcased her pipes in NBC's The Wiz Live! musical event in 2015.
