'Horrible Bosses' Duo Want Chevy Chase Back for 'Vacation' Reboot
"We intend to have a part for Clark Griswold," writer/director John Francis Daley tells THR. "We're hoping he'll be down to come back."
New Line's planned Vacation reboot may not stray too far from the original.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, co-writer and co-director John Francis Daley said he and collaborator Jonathan Goldstein would like to find a place for original franchise cast members Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo.
"It is something that we've been warned not to screw up," Daley told THR at the PaleyFest event for his Fox series, Bones. "We have confidence that there's still a lot to tell in the story of the Griswolds. And we've been involved with it for so long, it felt like the natural next step to direct."
Taking on the script in 2009, THR was recently first to report that Daley and Goldstein will also direct the project. Their script follows an adult Rusty Griswold, the son of Chase's Clark and D'Angelo's Ellen, as he experiences misadventures with his own family.
"There'll be no recasting, except for the fact that Rusty will now be grown up," said Daley. "We don't know who will be playing him, but we intend to have a part for Clark Griswold. Chevy, we're hoping he'll be down to come back -- and Beverly D'Angelo as well."
Chase and D'Angelo played husband and wife in all four of the original vacation movies: National Lampoon's Vacation, European Vacation, Christmas Vacation and Vegas Vacation.
Vacation isn't the only thing Daley and Goldstein have on their plates right now. The two are penning the sequel to their 2011 hit Horrible Bosses, and Daley says he plans to spend much of his Bones hiatus working on Steve Carell-Jim Carrey magician comedy Burt Wonderstone, which he and Goldstein also wrote.
"I've been on the set every time I'm not doing Bones, so I'm excited to see how it all turns out," he told THR. "The fact that I've gotten to work with Jim Carrey in this capacity is a dream come true. I wanted to be him when I was a kid."
