Variety Japan closes its doors

Marks trade pub's third Asia closure since 2007

TOKYO -- Variety Japan has ceased operations. The Japanese-language film trade Web site will be taken offline by the end of the month, according to a notice on the site.

Launched in November 2007, the venture was a licensing arrangement allowing Reed Business Information Japan that used the Variety brand. It was hosted on the Yahoo Japan platform.

A spokesperson for Variety Japan declined comment.

The closure is the third leg of Variety's publishing withdrawal from Asia. At the end of 2007, Reed ended its interest in Variety China, a Chinese-language bimonthly previously published as a joint venture with IDG and the State Administration for Radio, Film and Television.

In January, Variety Asia Online, the regional English-language site operated from Hong Kong, also was closed.
