Venice cops: No pay, no fest protection

Police say they are owed thousands from last year

LOCARNO, Switzerland -- Police in Venice on Thursday threatened to strike during this year's Venice Film Festival unless they receive back pay they are due for overtime work from last year's event.

The police union said that about 200 officers are owed on average about 1,300 euros ($2,050) in overtime pay from the 2007 Venice festival.

If they are not paid by the time the curtain goes up Aug. 27, Venice's red carpet might go unguarded.
