Veteran producer Rachel Low joins Shaftesbury
Ex-Frantic Films executive named vp of factual entertainmentTORONTO -- Indie drama producer Shaftesbury Films has hired veteran producer Rachel Low to lead it into factual programming.
Shaftesbury, best known for TV dramas like "The Listener" and "Murdoch Mysteries," is diversifying its business and development slate with the addition of factual genres.
Low, who becomes vp of factual entertainment at Shaftesbury, was most recently executive producer at Frantic Films, and before that president and executive producer of Red Apple Entertainment.
Canadian factual producers are major providers of reality series for Canadian and international broadcasters, including U.S. cable services.
Her most recent credits include the Food Network Canada series "Pitchin' In," which stars celebrity chef Lynn Crawford, and "The Opener," also for Food Network Canada.
Shaftesbury shifting into factual product comes as a host of Canadian indie producers look to weather the current industry downturn by diversifying into a range of programming, and not getting stung by overly focusing on one genre.
