Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic Brings Afternoon of Star-Studded Sports, Socializing and Champagne to L.A.
Guests included James Marsden, Nina Dobrev, Selma Blair and January Jones.
Hollywood stars and fashion icons came together at the Will Rogers State Historic Park for an afternoon of champagne and socializing at the sixth annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic in Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon. Hosted by Argentinean polo player Nacho Figueras and his wife, Delfina Blaquier, the star-studded event's guests included James Marsden, Jaime King, Jesse Metcalfe and Selma Blair.
“Veuve Clicquot has a long history with polo. Polo is a sport that has an extraordinary heritage and elegance, and so does Veuve Clicquot: wonderful heritage, innovation and creativity. It seemed like a natural mix,” explained company senior vp Vanessa Kay of the connection between the champagne brand and the sport.
After a 70-year absence, Veuve Clicquot brought polo back to New York for its first Polo Classic in 2008 and then to Los Angeles in 2010. This year differed from previous years in that each team had a female player, including Figueras’ wife, Blaquier.
“It’s very exciting. I’m feeling a little bit of butterflies in the stomach, which is good. I somehow love that feeling, I don’t know why. My father used to be a polo player, so I grew up with horses; it’s one of my greatest passions. I play polo with my family; my son, my brother, my sister, my cousin, we all ride, and to me, it’s a family thing,” said Blaquier of her first time playing in the event. “I’ve never done it professionally, but today, to play here, in this great event in front of 7,000 people, it’s quite amazing.”
Along with the polo match and champagne, one of the greatest attractions of the Polo Classic is the fashion. Guests included fashionistas Camilla Belle, Nina Dobrev, Lauren Conrad and Rachel Zoe.
“I’ve never been to a polo match, so my only reference was Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, so I went with polka dots and a hat,” said actress January Jones of her outfit for the event.
Actress Bellamy Young also mentioned the event’s parallel to the romantic comedy: “An afternoon of champagne and polo; it’s so Pretty Woman. I just couldn’t wait to see what it was all about!”
Said Scandal's Darby Stanchfield of the afternoon, “I love horses, and I love champagne. What’s not to love about today?”
Other guests spotted at the Polo Classic included Brittany Snow, Victoria Justice, Cheyenne Jackson, Curtis Stone and Lindsay Price.
