Viacom18 India To Launch Youth Cable Channel Sonic
The new network is described as the "Sci-Fi platform for the Wi-Fi generation" and will aim to bridge the gap between kids and teens.
NEW DELHI - Viacom 18 Media Pvt. Ltd. (the equal joint venture between Viacom Inc. and leading Indian media entity Network18), announced the launch of Sonic, the latest addition to the network's bouquet which includes MTV, Vh1, Nick and Hindi entertainment outlet Colors.
Described as the "Sci-Fi platform for the Wi-Fi Generation," Sonic will primarily target the 10-17 age group and will be available in multilingual feeds via analog and Direct To Home platforms. Sonic will feature a mix of action, adventure and animation content including live action shows and blockbuster films. Indian content will include local superhero live action show Shaktimaan along with international fare such as Kung Fu Panda - The Legend of Awesomeness, Jackie Chan Fantasia, Kong, Power Rangers and Supastrikas, among others. The channel will be supplemented with an online community via a soon-to-be launched website www.sonicgang.com.
“With the launch of Sonic, the Viacom18 Network can now take pride in being the only entertainment network in India that has specific brands to entertain viewers across every possible age segment from 2 years onwards,” said Viacom International Media Networks president and CEO Bob Bakish.
“The next 12 months will see Viacom18 in an expansion mode and the launch of Sonic is the first step in that direction,” added Viacom18 Group CEO Haresh Chawla.
“While innovation will be the key driver for Sonic's content, we plan to unleash interactivity through never-seen-before digital initiatives,” added Sonic and Nick India executive vp and GM Nina Elavia Jaipuria.
