'The Best of Me' Trailer: James Marsden Stars in Nicholas Sparks' Latest (Video)
James Marsden and Michelle Monaghan share forlorn glances and long embraces as they embark on a forbidden love affair in the romantic drama The Best of Me. Then again, what else would you expect from an adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel?
In the film's first trailer, their characters, Amanda and Dawson, meet in high school and fall in love. But they're from different sides of the tracks, and so Amanda's father forbids them from seeing each other.
The two go their separate ways but reunite twenty years later. They find it easy to pick up where they left off, although there are still forces preventing them from riding off into the sunset together. "You aren't just someone I loved back then," an adult Dawson tells Amanda. "You are the very best of me."
Luke Bracey (the upcoming Point Break reboot) plays young Dawson, and Liana Liberato (this summer's If I Stay) plays young Amanda. Schuyler Fisk and Scandal's Jon Tenney round out the cast.
Paul Walker had initially been attached to star in the film until his death from a car accident in November 2013, at which point Marsden stepped into the role. Marsden has been busy lately, having starred in May's Walk of Shame and the upcoming thriller The Loft, which hits theaters Aug. 29.
Michael Hoffman (Gambit) directed the film from a script by Will Fetters and J. Mills Goodloe. The film is based on the 2011 best-selling Sparks novel of the same name and appears to employ all the hallmarks that his fans have swooned for in previous film adaptations, such as 2004's The Notebook.
Relativity Media releases the film Oct. 17.
