Vilnius Film Festival to Fete Leos Carax, Charlie Chaplin
Spanning a century of cinema, Baltic region's leading movie showcase includes industry sidebar, Meeting Point Vilnius
The 20th edition of leading Baltic film event the Vilnius International Film Festival opened screenings Friday in the Lithuanian capital with more than 270 films due to unspool over the next two weeks.
Top international guests include French director Leos Carax, who will present his Cannes youth prize winning Holy Motors and a full retrospective of his films. Danish director Bille August will introduce his drama about euthanasia Silent Heart.
The festival, known by its Lithuanian name Kino Pavasaris, meaning "cinema spring," this year marks the 100th anniversary of Charlie Chaplin’s career. The festival held an opening gala screening of Chaplin's classic 23-minute 1915 movie, A Night in the Show, which is recognized as the film that began his long career. Chaplin's films will screen at an open-air theatre in Vilnius' Town Hall Square during the festival.
The festival's industry event, which runs March 31-April 2, Meeting Point Vilnius, which brings together film professionals from the Baltics and Europe, features keynote speakers that include creative team, Denmark's 'The Einstein Couple,' behind the marketing campaign for Lars von Trier's Nymphomania.
