David Bouchier becomes the first chief digital entertainment officer of the Liberty Global company.

U.K. cable operator Virgin Media, owned by John Malone's Liberty Global, has appointed David Bouchier as the leader of its content team in the role as the company's first chief digital entertainment officer.

In the newly created role, Bouchier will lead the content, programming and digital entertainment teams at Virgin Media as the cable operator seeks to further develop its TV and entertainment proposition. Stephane David, executive director, content, and Scott Kewley, director of digital entertainment, will report to him.

The European pay TV industry veteran has work experience in the U.K., Germany and Italy. He spent six years helping to develop the Sky business across Europe, first as a member of the management executive team of the former BSkyB in Britain, where he was responsible for handling the company’s investment in German pay TV, then with News Corp. as managing director, programming for Sky Italia.

He then returned to the U.K. and created a number of pay TV channels, including pre-school channel JimJam.

Said Virgin Media CEO Tom Mockridge: "I am delighted we have secured an executive of David’s caliber to lead our digital entertainment business. His depth of experience will help us develop the true potential of the award-winning TV and entertainment services offered by Virgin Media."

Said Bouchier: "Our industry is evolving at an unbelievable pace as our viewers demand more and more innovation from us. Virgin Media is the network of choice for the next generation, because it matches the speed of their lifestyle. I am very excited to be joining a business, which is making significant investments in what is already the U.K.’s most comprehensive TV and entertainment service."
