VMAs: Heather Heyer's Mother Presents "Best Fight Against the System"
Susan Bro presented the award in honor of her daughter, who was killed in Charlottesville.
Susan Bro, whose daughter Heather Heyer was killed during the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va., took the stage at the VMAs on Sunday to present the award for "Best Fight Against the System."
Reverend Robert Lee, a descendant of Robert E. Lee, introduced Bro, saying. "We have made my ancestor an idol of white supremacy, racism and hate." He said that he calls on everyone with "privilege and power" to "confront racism and white supremacy head-on."
When Bro walked over to the microphone she was greeted with a standing ovation. "My daughter Heather was killed as she protested racism," said Bro. "I miss her but I know she's here tonight." Bro said she has been "deeply moved" to see people across the world find inspiration in her daughter's courage. Bro announced the creation of a foundation in her daughter's name, which will provide scholarships to help people "join Heather's fight against hatred."
"I want people to know that Heather never marched alone, she was always joined by people from every race and every background," said Bro. In that spirit, Bro revealed that MTV has decided to honor all of the nominees for "Best Fight Against Their System" who displayed there are "many ways to take action and many battlegrounds in the fight fo social good."

I can think of no better platform to promote this foundation to the world than at the MTVs Video Music Awards.
