Wang Bing's 'Ditch' is surprise Venice film
Tells story of post-revolution Chinese dissident labor campsVENICE -- "Le fosse" (The Ditch) a 1950s period drama set in China from Wang Bing is the surprise in-competition film at this year's Venice Film Festival, organizers announced Monday.
The film, which is the 24th and final film in competition this year, tells the story of the forced labor camps where thousands of alleged Chinese dissidents were sent after the country's communist revolution.
The official world premiere of the film -- a Hong Kong/France/Belgium co-production -- will take place in Venice's Sala Darsena later Monday, with a reprise screening starting soon after in the PalaBiennale venue. It is being distributed internationally by Wild Bunch.
