Keri Russell, who starred in the 2007 film on which the musical is based, introduced the ensemble's performance. Christopher Fitzgerald was among the castmembers who performed the opening number "Opening Up" on a stage designed as the inside of a diner.

Sara Bareilles, seated behind a piano, then made an appearance, joining Jessie Mueller for a duet of "She Used to Be Mine."

The production was nominated for four Tonys, including best musical, best lead actress (for Mueller's performance) and best original score.
