WB hopes it has franchise 'Spy' guy in McG
EmptyWarner Bros. has acquired "Dead Spy Running," an upcoming spy novel by British author Jon Stock, for McG to direct. The film would serve as a launch of a franchise character.
Story details are under wraps, but the book, the first in a trilogy, aims to reinvent the spy genre by telling the origin story of a newly trained spy in a tone that mixes "The Bourne Identity" with the works of John Le Carre. "Spy" sold to a HarperCollins imprint in a bidding war and will be published in 2009.
McG, who would direct at least the first installment, is producing with Jeanne Allgood via their Warners-based Wonderland Sound and Vision.
Ollie Madden, one of the studio's men in the U.K., is overseeing.
McG, repped by Endeavor and Management 360, is in post on the fourth Terminator movie, "Terminator Salvation," which Warners is releasing domestically May 22. He also executive produces "Chuck," NBC's spy-themed action comedy series.
Stock is repped by RWSH. (partialdiff)
