Weinsteins find 'Joy' with docu buy
EmptyTORONTO -- The Weinstein Co. acquired North American rights late Thursday to director Grant Gee's music documentary "Joy Division" for a price in the low- to mid-six figures.
The chronological account of the influential late 1970s English rock band screened late last week at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Endeavor Independent, which had three of the biggest sales at last year's Toronto fest -- "Rescue Dawn," "El Cantante," which it co-repped with William Morris Independent, and "You Kill Me," which it co-repped with ICM -- repped the sale for the "Joy" filmmakers.
Endeavor Independent is on the verge of selling another hot title -- Stuart Townsend¹s protest drama "Battle in Seattle" -- at this year's fest.
"Joy, " from Katapult Films, Hudson Prods. and Brown Owl Films, is produced by Tom Astor, Tom Atencio and Jacqui Edenbrow.
Both a theatrical.and home video release are being considered. The film may make a good DVD box set with "Control," the narrative biopic of lead singer Ian Curtis, which TWC picked up from the Festival de Cannes in May.
"Control" won the Golden Camera-Special Mention award at Cannes.
