'The West Wing' Cast Gets "Cheesy" in White House Video Promo
For its second annual Big Block of Cheese Day, the White House recruited stars from the NBC political drama to promote the virtual gathering.
The White House will host its second annual virtual Big Block of Cheese Day on Jan. 21, and recruited The West Wing cast — again! — to spread the word.
In West Wing style, the video announcement features former castmembers Josh Malina, Dule Hill, Bradley Whitford, Mary McCormack, Allison Janney and Martin Sheen "cheesing around" on their phones.
"Gouda idea," 'Is this making you blue? Because blue is also a type of cheese" and "you feta believe it" are a few of the quips the West Wing stars joke about in the video.
The NBC political drama made reference to the Big Block of Cheese Day multiple times on the series, dubbing the annual days that President Bartlet (Sheen) and his staff members would meet with otherwise dismissed interest groups as "Big Block of Cheese Days"
On Jan. 21, senior White House officials will take to social media to answer the public's questions, including those about President Barack Obama's Jan. 20 State of the Union address. Using the hashtag #AsktheWH, the public can engage with senior White House officials online.
Big Block of Cheese Day was founded in 1837, when President Jackson had a 1,400-pound block of cheddar cheese delivered to the White House for the public to eat while asking questions of the president and his staff.
The White House promos are not the first time the West Wing cast has reunited. In 2012, the cast got together for a political campaign ad targeted at increasing voter awareness and a spot on Funny or Die; in 2014, the cast teamed up for the first annual virtual Big Block of Cheese Day promo.
The West Wing ran for seven seasons and wrapped in 2006.
