What to Expect From the MTV VMAs

The show airs Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV featuring performances from Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga and more.

The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards will air Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV from Brooklyn's Barclays Center.

To kick off the annual award show, this year's pre-VMAs will take place on Friday, Aug. 23 at New York's Terminal 5 with Robin Thicke headlining a performance. The concert will benefit Lifebeat, an organization dedicated to fighting HIV/AIDS.

Opening the VMAs will be Lady Gaga with the world premiere performance of "Applause." The singer is also expected to perform her "ARTPOP" single. Other artists to hit the stage include Kanye West with "Black Skinhead," Katy Perry with "Roar," and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis with "Same Love" along with performances by Miley Cyrus, Robin Thicke, Drake and Justin Timberlake, who will also be presented with a Vanguard Award from Jimmy Fallon.

While there is no official confirmation, rumors of a 'N Sync reunion and Daft Punk performance are likely to take place.

Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jared Leto, Kevin Hart, Emeli Sande and A$AP Rocky are among the show's presenters, with DJ Cassidy as the official DJ.

Leading with the most nominations in six categories, including video of the year, are Timberlake (for "Mirrors") and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (for "Thrift Shop"). Artists also vying for the top award include Bruno Mars (for "Locked Out of Heaven"), Robin Thicke feat. T.I. and Pharrell (for Blurred Lines"), and Taylor Swift (for "I Knew You Were Trouble").
