What's Sizzling Along the Coast

From their gourmet beach food to avocado smoothies, these five Malibu hotspots are what's in style on the shore this summer.
Karaoke Night at Cafe Habana
Wednesday nights from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., Cafe Habana turns into American Idol with a karaoke machine: Kid Rock and Cuba Gooding Jr. are two of the regulars who like to drop in for a prickly-pear margarita. It gets pretty raucous in here, particularly when one regular sings his cover of the dirty version of Cee Lo Green's "Forget You." Says a staffer: "He's God awful. But our crowd is very supportive." 3939 Cross Creek Road at the Malibu Lumber Yard, cafehabana.com
Savory Restaurant
This former diner/Chinese restaurant is beach-foodie paradise thanks to chef/owner Paul Shoemaker's (former chef at Bastide) modern redo. The casual, farmers-market-driven restaurant -- which draws a mix of beach-house owners, ladies in LBDs, surfers and character actors -- is packed most nights, with everyone at the 15-seat bar eating as well. Go for the crab cakes, pizza or fettucine with clams, end the night with bread pudding topped with pistachio-encrusted ice cream, then go running on the beach in the morning. 29169 Heathercliff Road, savorymalibu.com
5 Point Yoga
Having already won a following at his Point Dume location, yoga teacher Ted McDonald opened this second spot last year, offering everything from power yoga for the bikini crowd to a yin class for those who need to chill. 5 Point also does "aerial yoga" -- ceiling ballet-style work, like what you see in Cirque du Soleil. It's the perfect way to prep for an outing to Taverna Tony. Or a day affair at a billionaire's pool. 23410 Civic Center Way, Suite E-3, 5pointyoga.com
Sunlife Organics Juicebar
Move over, Nobu -- this is the 'Bu foodie hotspot of the moment. Opened just four weeks ago, Sunlife's already attracting rock stars (a Chili Pepper or two) with its Intelligentsia iced coffee, real Greek fat-free frozen yogurt and owner Khalil Rafati's unique smoothies with such ingredients as avocado and coconut meat. "There are about 200 people in here a day," Rafati says. "We almost can't handle any more business." 29169 Heathercliff Road, sunlifeorganicsmalibu.com
Missoni Malibu
This 500-square-foot branch opened a month ago, just in time for residents and visitors to stock up on rainbow-knit bikinis, sandals and outdoor pillows. What could be prettier than those zigzag-striped blanket throws in an all-white guest room? Or a giant Missoni floppy hat on July 4? And of course, those sunglasses. The question is, how long will those highly desired striped towels stay in stock? 3824 Cross Creek Road, missoni.com
