'White Irish Drinkers,' 'Winter's Bone' to Compete at Turin Film Fest
ROME -- Two U.S. films -- John Gray's coming-of-age story White Irish Drinkers and Winter's Bone from Debra Granik -- will screen in competition at the 28th Turin Film Festival, which will also feature a special homage to two-time Oscar-nominated director John Boorman.
Organizers said Thursday that the Nov. 26-Dec. 8 festival will open with In Your Hands from French director Lola Doillon and close with the European premiere of Clint Eastwood's Hereafter, both out of competition.
Only one Italian film, Alessandro Pivas Henry, is in the main competition of the festival, which focuses on first, second and third works from up-and-coming directors.
Other competition highlights include two U.K. films focusing on radical Muslim fundamentalism: Josh Appignanesi's The Infidel and Four Lions from Chris Morris.
Boorman will receive the festivals Gran premio Torino honor, and will also preside over a special screening of his 1972 classic Deliverance, which, along with 1987's Hope and Glory, earned the 77-year-old director's two Oscar nominations.
