The Who Releases App to Celebrate Band's 50th Anniversary

The legendary band's frontman Roger Daltrey says he's no fan of smartphones, though

What do you get when a group of rock 'n' roll legends celebrate half a decade of headlines and sold-out tours? That’s right, a mobile phone app.

To commemorate The Who’s 50th anniversary, The Who Immersive App has been released as a collaboration between Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend’s iconic band, Universal Music, Immersive and Trinifold Management. Available for free, the app offers fans the chance to explore rare and unseen images, together with artwork and artifacts amassed since the band's start in 1964.

Future updates will see the addition of more features, including 50th anniversary tour access, while a premium version will be released in 2015 for the Oculus Rift Virtual Reality headset.

"I’m not a fan of smartphones but have to admit they do open up huge possibilities to entertain and educate," said Daltrey in a statement. "The music business needs to use every avenue possible to keep the fans and the music in close contact. This app will hopefully teach our newer, younger fans everything they might want to know about our history, and hopefully unearth some odds and sods for our older ones."
