Wi-Max auction looms in Italy

CANNES -- The auction for rights to offer Wi-Max Internet access in Italy will take place before the end of the summer, Italy's Ministry of Communications said Tuesday.

Wi-Max -- the shorthand name for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access -- allows for wireless Internet connections over large areas. Italy's government, which was slow to promote Internet use in the 1990s, has said it wants to make the quick deployment of new digital technologies a top priority in the future.
