'My So-Called Life' Alum Wilson Cruz Mourns Relative Who Died in Orlando Shooting
"She and her joy for life were taken from us and we are devastated."
My So-Called Life alum Wilson Cruz's relative was one of the victims of last weekend's shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Fla.
Brenda Lee Marquez McCool was Cruz's mother's stepsister. "She was hilarious and loving and tore up the dance floor when salsa or anything was playing," Cruz wrote in a post grieving for his family member on Facebook. "I can't believe she's gone. I mourn with her kids and my entire family."
Cruz told Entertainment Tonight that McCool was at Pulse with her 21-year-old openly gay son Isaiah. "They loved to go there on that night because it was Latin night and they could be with their friends, dance salsa and find refuge in a safe space," Cruz told ET. "That joy was taken from them, and she and her joy for life were taken from us and we are devastated."
Cruz said he and his mother's stepsister were close in age and like cousins. McCool was a single mother and cancer survivor and a "proud and fierce advocate for her LGBT family," Cruz wrote on Facebook. On Twitter, Cruz shared a link to a GoFundMe page for McCool that is designed to raise money to cover her funeral costs and assist the 11 children she leaves behind.
