Wim Wenders’ ‘Pina’ Favorite Among European Documentary Nominees
'¡Vivan Las Antipodas!' from Russia’s Victor Kossakovsky and Dutch documentary 'Position Among the Stars' are also nominated for Europe’s top film honor.
COLOGNE, Germany – Wim Wenders’ acclaimed 3D dance documentary Pina, about the life and work of late choreographer Pina Bausch, is the front-runner for this year’s European Documentary honor, the Prix Arte.
Pinais one of the three nominees for this year’s prize, along with Position Among The Stars from Dutch doc veteran Leonard Retel Helmrich and ¡Vivan Las Antipodas! from Russian filmmaker Victor Kossakovsky.
Helmrich’s Position is the third film in an award-winning trilogy about life in modern-day Indonesia. The more experimental Vivan juxtaposes life in two very different cities: Entre Rios in Argentina and the Chinese metropolis of Shanghai.
Both Kossakovsky and Helmrich are acclaimed documentary directors but Wenders is the clear favorite to take the European Documentary prize when the European Film Awards are presented in Berlin Dec. 3. Pina has been a box office success at home and sold worldwide. In a rare move, Germany has nominated it as its official entry for next year’s foreign-language Oscar contender.
