Working Title Television has expanded its presence in the U.K., naming Mark Freeland its head of TV comedy.

Freeland, who joins after a lengthy spell at the BBC, will work closely alongside Working Title TV managing director Andrew Woodhead, who joined last year.

Most recently controller, fiction and entertainment at the BBC, a post he had held since 2014, Freeland led the comedy, drama and entertainment production teams for BBC Studios, during which time he worked on Comic Relief, co-executive producing four Red Nose Days.

Prior to this, Freeland served as the BBC's controller of comedy production, helping deliver in-house shows such as W1A, Inside Number 9 and Absolutely Fabulous, while exec producing shows including The Wrong Mans, The Thick of It, Miranda, Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle and Mrs. Browns Boys.

"Working Title has a long history of producing great comedy with some of the best talent in the business and we look forward to working with Mark to build on that legacy,” said Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, Working Title's co-chairmen.

“Working Title has been behind some of the most original comedy storytelling ever dreamt up, including my favorite movie of all time," said Freeland. "So I feel very lucky indeed joining such an iconic, creative company. To have been given a wonderful opportunity to build something special and work with the most exciting comedy talent in the U.K., getting their work produced here and abroad. And yes, it is Fargo."

Working Title TV is a joint venture within the NBCUniversal International Studios group of companies.
