World Cup scores on cricket in India

Strong ratings for soccer tournament in cricket country

NEW DELHI -- The FIFA World Cup in South Africa has managed to record strong ratings in cricket-crazy India, yielding 53 million viewers for broadcaster ESPN Star Sports data for matches in the first two weeks of the tournament, according to ratings agency Television Audience Measurement.

The FIFA World Cup took on cricket's Asia Cup tournament, broadcast on Neo Sports, which garnered 81.7 million viewers recording an average television rating of 1.7%. By comparison, the first 51 matches of the FIFA world cup from June 11- 25 recorded an average TVR of 0.65%, yielding 53 million viewers.

The highest TVR for football was 1.93% for the match between Portugal and Brazil played on June 25. With the event ending this Sunday, it is fair to expect the ratings to increase considerably.

Bollywood is also supporting the event with major stars heading their way to South Africa, such as superstar Shah Rukh Khan who is already in Johannesburg with his family to attend the finals and closing ceremony at Soccer City Stadium. “Would love to see Germany in the final... they have been so good,” Khan posted on microblogging site Twitter Wednesday, as Germany takes on Spain in a match whose winner will take on the Netherlands in the finals.
