TORONTO — The N has picked up the Canadian teen series "About a Girl," its first scripted comedy, for a fall release. The U.S. cable channel, which has found ratings success with Canadian dramas like "Degrassi: The Next Generation," "Whistler" and "Instant Star," will see the first season of "About a Girl," from Vancouver-based producer Brightlight Pictures, bow this fall. The comedy stars Chiara Zhanni as a first-year university student who lives off-campus with four male roommates.
PARIS — Paris' high courts cracked down on Gallic media-sharing Web site Dailymotion on Friday, condemning the "French YouTube" for copyright infringement of Christian Carion's "Merry Christmas." The decision marks the first time a media-sharing site has been found guilty of not only illegally broadcasting a specific video, but also for the very construction of the site, which the court claims facilitates piracy. Dailymotion removed the title in January, but Nord-Ouest Prods. pursued the case. The court ordered Dailymotion to take responsibility for copyright infringement and to employ strict controls over the site's content.
PARIS — CBS Corp. president and CEO Leslie Moonves will deliver the opening keynote speech at Cannes-based audiovisual content market MIPCOM in October, organizers said Monday. Additional industry players delivering keynotes include NBC/Universal's Ben Silverman, Grupo Televisa's Emilio Azcarraga, UTV Group's Ronnie Screwvala, the Zee Network's Subhash Chandra, Joost's Mike Volpi and United Artists' Paula Wagner. The event runs Oct. 8-12.
