Based on the 2007 Ken Follett novel of the same name and taking place after Pillars of the Earth, the eight-hour limited series is set in 14th century England amid natural disasters, plague and war. It stars Cynthia Nixon, Miranda Richardson, Ben Chaplin, Peter Firth, Charlotte Riley, Rupert Evans, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Megan Follows and Sarah Gadon, among others.

Shot on location in Hungary, Austria and Slovakia with Howard Ellis' Mid Atlantic Films, the miniseries was produced by Tandem Communications and Take 5 Productions in co-production with Galafilm and in association with Ridley Scott and Tony Scott's shingle Scott Free Films.
