WWE Superstar Darren Young Tells TMZ Cameras He's Gay
The organization has issued a statement of support for the 33-year-old, the first wrestler to come out while signed to a major promotion.
Darren Young, a 33-year-old WWE Superstar wrestler, made a surprise announcement to a TMZ reporter at the baggage carousel of Los Angeles International Airport: He's gay.
Approached by the Hollywood gossip site for comment on whether the pro-wrestling world would accept an openly gay player, Young, who flew to Los Angeles to participate in WWE's SummerSlam tournament, replied, "Absolutely. Look at me. I’m a WWE Superstar and to be honest with you, I’ll tell you right now I’m gay and I’m happy. Very happy."
Asked if the announcement marked his official coming out, Young, whose real name is Fredrick Douglas Rosser, matter-of-factly asked, "Does it matter? Does it matter to you? Does it change what you think about me? I guess if you want to call it coming out; I really don’t know what to say it is, but I’m just letting you know. I’m happy with who I am, I’m comfortable with myself, and I’m happy to be living the dream."
The WWE issued a statement of support for Young's decision.
"WWE is proud of Darren Young for being open about his sexuality, and we will continue to support him as a WWE Superstar. Today, in fact, Darren will be participating in one of our Be A Star anti-bullying rallies in Los Angeles to teach children how to create positive environments for everyone regardless of age, race, religion or sexual orientation," the organization said.
The 6'1", 240-pound Young, who was born in Union, N.J. but now calls Miami home, is the first wrestler to come out as gay while still signed to a major promotion.
After news spread of his coming out on Thursday, Young tweeted a quote from Tony-winning playwright and actor Harvey Fierstein: "Never b bullied n2 silence. Never allow yourself 2 be made a victim. Accept no ones definition of your life; DEFINE YOURSELF."
Young's Twitter profile, however, still looked in need of a little updating.
"As comfortable in the VIP section as he is in the ring, Darren Young’s life revolves around three things -- money, women and wrestling," it reads.
