Yahoo! adds Bix to menu of social media offerings

Members create contests for service

Yahoo! Inc. is adding social media service Bix to its menu of offerings, a company representative said.

Founded in January, Bix features online contests with Web-based video and audio recording tools where users can create, enter and serve as judges for those contests, which range from karaoke, dance and comedy to beauty, photography and writing.

The competitions are initiated by Bix members, who also establish the contests' criteria and deadlines.

The acquisition, which will be finalized in March, includes plans to integrate the Bix platform across Yahoo! from its home page to Yahoo! Messenger and Yahoo! Video. It comes at a time when the Internet portal has stepped up efforts in the area of social networking. Yahoo! previously acquired Flickr, del.icio.us, Upcoming.org and Jumpcut.

Yahoo! will retain Bix's 16 employees, while Bix founder Mike Speiser will become vp community at Yahoo! in its Communities, Communications and Front Doors group, where he will drive such products as Yahoo! Groups, Yahoo! 360º, Yahoo! Photos and Bix.
