Yash Raj Films' Arjun Sablok Named British Columbia Envoy to Bollywood
The 'Neal N Nikki' director will talk up the Canadian province in India as a film locale
Yash Raj Films director Arjun Sablok has become British Columbia's envoy in Bollywood as the Canadian province promotes itself in India as a production destination.
Sablok, whose film writer/director credits include Neal N Nikki and Na Tum Jaano Na Hum, was named B.C.'s film envoy on a trade mission last week to Bollywood by provincial premier Christy Clark.
Sablok is Canadian and has lived in Mumbai for 25 years. His gig to shill for B.C. follows India in July 2014 becoming the 54th country to have an official film co-production treaty with Canada.
The westernmost Canadian province with a large Indo-Canadian community earlier targeted Bollywood by hosting the inaugural Times of India Films Awards in Vancouver in 2013. The latest bid to invite Bollywood to B.C. follows rival provinces Ontario and Quebec juicing their film tax credits to draw Hollywood film and TV shoots to Toronto and Montreal.
Clark isn't the only Canadian politician to court local Bollywood fans. Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper in 2011 named Bollywood star Akshay Kumar as Canada's tourism ambassador.
