YouTube to Support Female Filmmakers Through Global Production Program

YouTube has launched a production program designed to support female filmmakers on its platform. 

Over the last several months, YouTube invited creators who work both in front of and behind the camera to its production facilities around the world to produce videos that spotlight the female perspective. Michelle Phan and GloZell are among the creators who have produced videos for the program.  

As part of the program, YouTube also appointed six established creators — including actress and filmmaker Anna Akana and makeup artist Alexys Fleming — as creative directors to mentor emerging filmmakers and participate in their projects. 

Additionally, YouTube has partnered with the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media to consult with the creators on their representation of gender onscreen. "Entertainment today often depicts a society where there are far fewer female characters than male characters, and the characters that are female are often more stereotyped," said Davis. "We need more strong female voices represented in media so that this gender balance becomes normal to the young girls who are turning on their screens. By taking this step to empower and represent more female voices on YouTube, I hope that more young girls and women around the world can be inspired to be part of the creative community." 

Furthermore, the Google-owned streaming service paired with the United Nations to appoint top YouTube creators as Change Ambassadors for the UN's sustainable development action campaign. The first group of ambassadors includes beauty vlogger Ingrid Nilsen and fashion-focused creator Louise Pentland. 

"YouTube has always been a platform where women of all ages and backgrounds can find their voice and tell their stories," said YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki. "Through our global YouTube Spaces program and new partnership with the UN, we'll strengthen female voices on YouTube and around the world."
